Schmekel wins at first start
15 December 2013
Schmekel p9184s

Schmekel (Shaft x Play Loud) did the black-with-white-polka-dots proud today as a promoted winner at Ellerslie. Badly inconvenienced in the straight, the three-year old gelding looked like a nice, strong type at the Sydney Weanling Sale, so I was more than happy to grab him for AU$13,000. Trainer and part-owner Richard Otto feels Schmekel will race up to group company. Personally I believe he will make a very nice miler. We plan to give him a few more runs over summer before going out for a spell.

Bonjour from Deauville
12 December 2013
France

It’s been hard going from a Kiwi summer to the northern hemisphere weanling sales but everything’s panned out well. My first stop was the Tattersalls sale at Newmarket, where weanlings sold for up to 450,000 guineas. Not having quite that amount of money to spend, I picked up colts by Sahkee (14,000 guineas), King’s Best (10,000 guineas) and Zoffany (18,000 guineas). Then it was on to Deauville to pick out another colt, this time by Stormy River for €11,000. This is the first stage of a five-year plan to hopefully win some big staying races in Australia (one that doesn’t require big money to buy proven racehorses). The next comes in February, when the weanlings arrive here in NZ.

Frankel – what a magnificent looking stallion!
8 December 2013
Frankel

On my trip to the UK and France I’ve been lucky to squeeze in a couple of stud visits, including one to Juddmonte Farm where I got to take a look at Frankel, a stallion that is even more impressive in the flesh. And Wertheimer Farm, which has been home to the likes of Goldikova, Riverman and Lyphard. The chateau and grounds of this farm, run by the owners of the House of Chanel, have to be seen to be believed. Perhaps even more amazingly, they don't sell any of their horses - whatever they breed they race.

Three Group 1 wins in a row

Buffering (Mossman x Action Annie) made it three Group 1 wins in a row with his victory in the Winterbottom Stakes. Earlier in the day, Guardlock (Dehere x Classic Dom) ran a fast-finishing third in the three-year old race.

Pinch River on track for Magic Millions

Pinch5

Pinch River (Denman x Avenue Girl) has won by six lengths at his second start and is now bound for the Magic Millions Classic. On his blog, Rob's Shout, Robert said: "He sure does look to be a very promising youngster with his biggest asset probably being the fact that he takes everything in his stride. He is just a real little professional. I have now popped him out to Washpool Lodge for a couple of weeks rest before he comes back to prepare for the Bruce McLachlan feature in late December as lead up to the Magic Millions Classic."

Buffering too quick in VRC Stakes

buffy

Buffering (Mossman x Action Annie) is heading to Ascot for the Winterbottom Stakes after racking up his second Group 1 win in a row. I'm running out of things to say about this horse so I'll leave it to Robbie, "Two weeks ago he was the bridesmaid who couldn't win a Group One now he's knocked off the best in the world. There were one or two unanswered questions from the Manikato but none today. It was a win of pure guts, determination and ability.''

Pinch River early 2yo winner at Eagle Farm

Pinch

Trained by one Robert Heathcote, Pinch River (Denman x Avenue Girl) was an $85,000 purchase at Magic Millions. The colt is the third foal out of the winning Catbird mare, making it distantly related to the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Detroit (dam of multiple Group 1 winner and successful stallion Carnegie). So it has a bit of breeding behind it. I was actually the underbidder on Pinch River as a weanling and the horse is one of the main reasons I like Denman so much.
