Purchases fight out finish of Waikato Guineas
31 January 2015
Mongolian Khan

Top result for clients in the Group 2 feature at Te Rapa today, with Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor x Centafit) and Prima (Sir Percy x Azabella) fighting out the finish. Mongolian Khan was a $9,000 Melbourne Weanling Sale purchase that Courtney Howells of Ainsley Downs Stud later sold for $140,000 at Karaka. While Prima cost just $12,000 and is now Group-placed at start number three.

Not a single doubt about these ones

Diamond Master

Good results for pinhooks that each sold for $130,000 as yearlings. Promising filly Every Faith (Not A Single Doubt x Zephyria) ($28,000) beat a field of milers at Moonee Valley, before Diamond Master (above) (Not A Single Doubt x Sandy Desert) ($51,000) took out the Class 4 1000m at Sha Tin. As a side note, Line Seeker (O’Reilly x Hooked Ona Feeling), a horse I bought privately, won the HK$2 million Griffin Trophy. All in all a good weekend!

Bonjour from Deauville
9 December 2014

It’s cold as ice here in France but at least I’m not missing out on much of the Auckland ‘summer’ by the sounds of things. I have bought two weanlings. One is Pontmain (above) (€28,000), a colt by the latest siring sensation over this way, Le Havre, from a Cape Cross mare that is closely related to Group 1 winners Taipan and Ali Royal. The other colt is by Whipper out of Souriante (€18,000). Whipper has a handful of runners in Australia, among them Wazn and Beyond Thankful. By the way, those weanlings I bought this time last year are all doing well in pre-training - I’ll have an update on them soon.

Sydney Classic graduates go well
23 November 2014

Some good results in the last week for purchases from the Sydney Classic Yearling Sale. The first came at Ready to Run, where Mana Park turned around a Sebring x Debutante colt (above) for $280,000 – a dream result considering we paid just $36,000. Debutante is a young mare and the dam of Veuvelicious, a Northern Meteor filly that won twice at two for stakes of $160,000. Closer to home, the Dane Shadow x Snapshots filly, now racing as Cinematic, ran a very nice second in a listed race at Avondale. This was a $40,000 purchase for Les Archer, who also owns Alegrio (13 wins). Best of luck to all connections.

Perfect start for First Light partnership
3 October 2014

So far, so good for my association with First Light Racing after Face Forward (Charge Forward x Endearment) won its second race, this time at Moonee Valley. This filly was the first horse I bought for Tim and the team, and the first winner. She looks promising going into black type races later in the spring. Hopefully it’s a good sign for the family as I bought a half-brother by Mossman at the Easter Sales. (Photo courtesy of Sarah Ebbett, Victory Media Australia)

It’s true: windsuckers can be winners
10 September 2014

Finding out you have a windsucker, while far from ideal, is not necessarily the end of the world as Jaspers Magic (Magic Albert x Jarada) proved when winning a maiden at Doomben yesterday. I paid $22,000 for the horse at the Inglis Classic in 2012 only to realise its problem after the hammer went down. Fortunately one of my very good owners, John Thompson of Atapi/Sound the Alarm fame, generously offered to take the horse, which has since recorded a win and three placings from nine starts and finished no further back than fifth. Robbie feels Jaspers Magic should now go right on with the job, which would be just reward for John’s patience.

Broodmare purchases continue to do well
23 August 2014

I don’t buy too many mares but the pick to date would have to be Parfore, a $30,000 purchase at the NZB Broodmare Sale in 2004. The Gold Brose mare has become a real ‘blue hen’ with four black type winners including Tiger Tees and Terrivista, winners at Randwick on Saturday. Others to the fore lately were Volksini ($115,000) the dam of eight-race winner Volkhere (pictured above). And Amelia’s Dream, which has left the very promising 3yo Better Land, a horse knocked from pillar to post in the Up & Coming Stakes.
