Team switches to top jockey, gets result
21 April 2014
ass

Asadauskaite (Pentire x Gold Circle) won a maiden on the Kensington track today under the urgings of top Kiwi jockey, James McDonald. A recent transfer to Mike Moroney’s Randwick stable, the filly ran a handful of minor placings at provincial meetings here in NZ with Mark Sweeney on top. Australian clients paid $75,000 for this one at the Karaka Premier Sale. She's now bound for the Queensland Oaks.

Excellantes cracks the half million mark

Excellantes2

Excellantes' (Falvelon x Cantantes) win in the listed sprint at Eagle Farm yesterday helped take its stake earnings to well over $550,000. The 6yo gelding's race record now stands at a respectable 36 starts for nine wins and 11 placings, which is not bad given the $105,00 I paid on behalf of connections at the Magic Millions QTIS Sale back in 2009. As Robbie said in the post race interview, the horse is a few lengths off the real top guns but 'it's been a great ride for the owners'.

Next top Mossman gelding for Robbie?

Hop

Hopfgarten (Mossman x Black Tourmaline) made it a hat-trick at Eagle Farm on Wednesday, after coming from third last to win carrying 59kg. As you can imagine on the back of Buffering's success, I am quite fond of the Mossman progeny. Which is why two days later I bought another one from the Sydney Easter Yearling Sale, a cracking type from the Danehill mare Endearment. While I was there I also purchased a lovely Not a Single Doubt filly from the Arrowfield draft for $200,000. Fingers crossed the team at First Light Racing can enjoy great success with her.

Filly confirms potential with stakes victory
29 March 2014

The Robert Smerdon-trained Every Faith (Not a Single Doubt x Zephyria) won an $80,000 stakes race for fillies in Adelaide today. Although the win was only her second, the filly, a $28,000 weanling, did perform well in Melbourne last spring, running sixth in the Edward Manifold and fifth in Kirramosa's VRC Oaks. The dam has a yearling colt by Starcraft and a weanling filly by Snitzel.

Boys

Well, the weanlings landed mid-February and came out of quarantine two weeks later. Although their coats have been clipped and appear quite dull, they all seem very healthy. Only two needed to be treated - one for a touch of travel sickness and the other for a slight cold. All four will be gelded in the coming weeks and left to mature on a farm in the Waikato before being broken in late winter/early spring. I'll be back with more news then. (Clockwise from top left: the Sahkee, Stormy River, King's Best and Zoffany colts.)

Cooldini back in form

cooldini

Cooldini (Bernadini x Eliza Dane) won a listed 2600m at Flemington today, taking stakes winnings over the $300,000 mark. Not bad for a $40,000 yearling. The gelding looked very promising as a 3yo last winter, winning three in a row over middle distances, and now comes into calculations for the Adelaide Cup.

Winners in Oz this week

Royal Occassion

Two young horses I pinhooked for clients won in Oz last week. The first was Injunction (Thorn Park x Interdict), a three-year old colt trained by John Sadler that was bought for $26,000 as a weanling and on-sold for $60,000 as a yearling. Four days later, another three-year old, by the name of Royal Occassion (Lonhro x Shand) (pictured above) - bought for $70,000 as a weanling and on-sold for $125,000 as a yearling - won its first start for Gerald Ryan. Good luck to the connections.
