Solzhenitsyn wins second Toorak
13 October 2013
Solzhenitsyn team

Solzhenitsyn (St Petersburg x Tri Victory) won the Toorak Handicap today, continuing its fine run of form when I'm not on track! (Call me superstitious.) We were worried about a lack of pace going into the race, so we told Nash not to be afraid to lead from the jump. But as it panned out the leaders set a cracking pace and Nash was able to sit quietly in fifth all the way. Showing patience with this seven-year old is really paying off now, so congratulations to Laurence, Jeno, Damon, Andrew and Cherry. Robbie what can I say - another masterful training effort mate.

Sir Andrew lives up to promise with Group 2 win
7 October 2013
SirAndrew

Big congratulations to John and Margaret for their win with Sir Andrew (Sir Percy x Biennale) in the Hawkes Bay Guineas yesterday. The trainer has been quietly talking this horse up for a while now so fingers crossed it really can be the best horse to race in those familiar blue and green colours. There's a good write-up on The Informant website today for anyone who is interested.

Buffering and Robbie win again
30 September 2013
rh

Buffering has been named Queensland Horse of the Year for the second time. The luckless sprinter has now placed second in six Group 1 races, including two Stradbrokes, a Newmarket and Manikato. (So frustrating!) I must say well done to Robbie for once again topping the trainer's premiership - I hope you and the team had a good night mate.

Heathcote sitting on a hat-trick!

Queensland trainer Robbie Heathcote could be starting a bit of a trend with maiden winners at Eagle Farm. Last Wednesday Tiger Jet (Jet Spur x Tiger Magic), a horse I bought for $40,000 at the QTIS Yearling Sale, won. Then today, Hopfgarten (Mossman x Black Tourmaline) took out what the trainer described as a very strong 3yo maiden. Hopfgarten was a $26,000 purchase at the Magic Millions Winter Yearling Sale. I wonder if Robbie can make it three in a row for me next Wednesday. I’ll have to check the noms!

Weanlings show promise as early 3yos
5 September 2013

Two horses I bought as weanlings are starting to show promise as early three-year olds. The Mick Price-trained colt, Le Mans (Sebring x Amouage) won at its third start, prompting the syndicate to seek a start in the Caulfield Guineas. While Every Faith (Not a Single Doubt x Zephyria), trained by Robert Smerdon, triumphed over a strong maiden field at Seymour. The filly is currently 30-1 in markets for the One Thousand Guineas. I went to $30,000 for Le Mans and $28,000 for Every Faith. Both were re-sold as yearlings, for $100,000 and $130,000 respectively.

Hidden Kisses a Group 3 winner in Sydney
24 August 2013
Hidden Kisses

Hidden Kisses (Hidden Dragon x Kiss an Angel) won a Group 3 over 1300m at Warwick Farm today. Previously a big winner under the QTIS bonus scheme for Robbie Heathcote, the mare was transferred to the Chris Waller stable at the start of August. She held off highly regarded stablemate Royal Descent by half a length.

Two winners for John Thompson today
21 August 2013
Face off

Long-time client John Thompson won races on both sides of the Tasman today. The first win came courtesy of Sir Andrew (Sir Percy x Biennale) in race one at Waipa. It was hardly champagne racing but the way in which the gelding won greatly impressed Richard Otto, who will now set him for the Hawkes Bay Guineas. I bought this horse as a weanling from Rich Hill Stud, which, oddly enough, is run by another John Thompson who I also know. A few hours later, John’s other runner, Face Off (Face Value x Garden Flower), won at Doomben. Considering he pulled all the way and got a bump at the 700m, it was a brave effort. Bought for AU$36,000 at the 2007 Melbourne Weanling Sale, Face Off was unplaced in NZ before winning his first two starts for Shaun Dwyer. The gelding is now trained by Robbie Heathcote.
