Two winners for John Thompson today
21 August 2013
Face off

Long-time client John Thompson won races on both sides of the Tasman today. The first win came courtesy of Sir Andrew (Sir Percy x Biennale) in race one at Waipa. It was hardly champagne racing but the way in which the gelding won greatly impressed Richard Otto, who will now set him for the Hawkes Bay Guineas. I bought this horse as a weanling from Rich Hill Stud, which, oddly enough, is run by another John Thompson who I also know. A few hours later, John’s other runner, Face Off (Face Value x Garden Flower), won at Doomben. Considering he pulled all the way and got a bump at the 700m, it was a brave effort. Bought for AU$36,000 at the 2007 Melbourne Weanling Sale, Face Off was unplaced in NZ before winning his first two starts for Shaun Dwyer. The gelding is now trained by Robbie Heathcote.

St Andrews gives Robbie his 100th win for the season

St Andrew

St Andrews (Sandtrap x Nun's Chorus) gave Robbie Heathcote his 100th win for the season at Doomben yesterday. Well done sir! You've got the horse looking in great nick. Both trainer and jockey (Glen Colless) feel St Andrews has a bit of talent but might be a prep away from getting it all together. Look out for him in a benchmark 75 over a mile in two weeks time.

Lucky number 13 for old campaigner
13 July 2013

Rising 8-year old Alegrio (Captain Rio x Eledance) won its 13th race on the 13th of July carrying 60kg. What a big effort by the little horse, which beat multiple Group winner Veyron on the way to passing $300,000 in prizemoney. Congratulations once again to my long time client, Les Archer. I hope you and the syndicate are having a lot of fun with this one.

Hillbilly Bear wins again for Jen!
6 July 2013

Hillbilly Bear (Thorn Park x Classic Vault) won a class 4 handicap at Kranji for good friend and client, Jenny Grieve, last night. It was the 4-year old's second win since transferring to Mark Walker's Singapore stable. The gelding has now won $92,000 - only $89,000 more than it did in New Zealand!

Cooldini proves exciting staying prospect
22 June 2013

Rangy gelding Cooldini (Bernadini x Eliza Dane) made it three in a row with a win over 2500m at Flemington on Saturday. The victory came on the back of a 12-length win at Sandown, which local journalists described as one of the largest winning margins seen there for some time. Bought as a weanling for $40,000 and sold for the same price a year later, this horse is now among the most improved staying 3-year olds in Melbourne. It has won 5 from 12 and $215,000 in stakes.

St Andrews gets the chocolates for new syndicate
7 February 2013
St Andrews2

St Andrews (Sandtrap x Nun's Chorus) won a class 1 1300m at the Sunshine Coast today. The 4yo gelding previously showed promise in winning for Richard Otto but we just thought this horse would be better off racing in Queensland. So we sent it to Robbie who has done a great job of finding new owners to join in the fun. Damian Browne said St Andrews travelled well in patches but was on and off the bit a few times which mostly comes down to inexperience. There's a class 3 1350m coming up at Doomben in two weeks - look out for the black and white polka dots!
