Promising stayers find form
23 August 2012

Two promising staying prospects won in Australia on the weekend. Brilliant Dragon (Hidden Dragon x Lady Brilliant), trained by Robbie Heathcote, won by more than four lengths in his first start past 1600m. While Captain Stipo (King’s Chapel x Bella Veloce) won over a mile at his fourth start for Shaun Dwyer. Brilliant Dragon was a $42,500 yearling purchase. I paid $40,000 for the other horse at the Ready to Run sale.

Hidden Kisses great advertisement for QTIS
6 August 2012

Five-year old mare Hidden Kisses (Hidden Dragon x Kiss an Angel) continued on her winning way at Brisbane yesterday. Now the winner of six races and more the $360,000, she is a great advertisement for the Queensland bonus scheme (QTIS) which accounts for more than half of her prize money. I bought Hidden Kisses for $25,000 as a yearling. She will have her next run in a fortnight, at Doomben.

Better going paves way for form reversal

Trapiche (Sandtrap x Corniche) showed sharp improvement on better going to win the feature sprint at Whangarei on Saturday. Running out the race in 1.12 on a dead 4, he has now won or placed in over half his starts. Look for the gelding, a $25,000 purchase at the sales, to back up at Te Rapa this weekend.

Ourforeignminister game winner Te Awamutu Cup
6 July 2012

Wet track specialist Ourforeignminister (Dubai Destination x Secret Revenue) was a game all the way winner of the Te Awamutu Cup on Saturday. The 5yo Australian-bred gelding has now won seven of 26 starts in the care of Richard Otto. I liked this horse so much I bought him twice – once as a weanling for $47,500 then as a yearling for $100,000! His biggest win has been the Merial Metric Mile – surprisingly – on a dead 4 at Awapuni.

Keep an eye on Gok when he resumes in the spring
27 June 2012

It may have only been a maiden win at Te Teko but Gok (Shinko King x Pink Melody) showed he has all the makings of a very promising galloper. Ridden by James McDonald, Gok missed the start but steadily made ground through the field to win by two lengths. I bought this 3yo for $21,000 as a weanling. He will now be turned out for the rest of the winter.

Another listed win for son of With Love
23 June 2012
Hoss Amor

Hoss Amor won his third listed race for John O’Shea and connections at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The General Nediym 2yo is out of With Love, a mare I bought as a breeding proposition for $77,500 in 2008. With Love’s first three foals have sold for well over $250,000. She has since left an outstanding Wanted colt that will go through the ring early next year.

Parfore among elite of Kiwi broodmares
18 May 2012
With Love

One of my broodmare purchases doing well right now is Parfore, the dam of Super Easy (Darci Brahma). Fourth in Fort Lincoln’s 2011 Karaka Million, Super Easy is now an unbeaten Group One winner in Singapore. I bought Parfore for just $30,000 in 2004. Currently in foal to Zabeel, she has produced three group or listed winners including Our Lucas and Tiger Tees.
