Stradbroke start possibility after win in Lord Mayor’s Cup
20 May 2012
Solz x2

Solzhenitsyn backed up well to lead all the way in the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m). We might start him in the Stradbroke but he is quite far down the order of entry. Robert thinks a race like the Group 1 Emirates at Flemington might be a better option. If the other owners agree his next assignment will likely be the Tatts Mile on June 23.

Double at Doomben
13 May 2012

Solzhenitsyn (St Petersburg x Tri Victory) is shaping as one of Queensland’s more promising sprinter-milers following his win at Doomben on Saturday. The lightly raced five-year old cost me $10,000 as a weanling and is trained by my good friend Robert Heathcote, who also won with Excellantes (Falvelon x Cantantes). Excellantes, which I purchased for $105,000, has now won more than three times that amount. Both horses should be competitive in upcoming stakes races at the carnival.

Cugar Park

Cugar Park (King Cugat x Balfour Park) recorded her second win from nine starts when she won over 2200m at Hawkes Bay on Friday. I bought this promising staying type, out of a half-sister to Vonusti, for $1,500 as a yearling.

Alegrio cracks $200,000 in stakes
30 April 2012

The win of Alegrio (Captain Rio x Eledance) at Te Rapa on Saturday pushed the horse's career earnings to $222,397 from 41 starts. That's a good return considering the gelding's $30,000 purchase price as a yearling. From memory, Alegrio was the lowest priced yearling colt sold from the first crop of Captain Rio.

Group 1 glory for Choice Bro connections
31 March 2012

Choice Bro (Choisir x Ladidi) cemented his position as one of the best two-year olds this season by winning the Group 1 Manawatu Sires Produce. As expected the extra 200m suited him a lot better than it did most of his rivals. He now travels to Queensland in search of more riches.

Choice Bro defeats Karaka Million rival
20 February 2012

It was great to see Choice Bro (Choisir x Ladidi) turn the tables on the Karaka Million winner, Ockham's Razor, in the Group 3 2YO Classic at Taranaki today. I originally bought this horse for $40,000 as a weanling at the Sydney sales. Here's hoping he can carry this form into the Sires Produce races.

Trapiche bags a double at Ellerslie
30 December 2011

Trapiche (Sandtrap x Corniche) has won at Ellerslire for the second time in three weeks. The Sandtrap gelding, a $25,000 purchase as a yearling, has now won or placed in 14 of 26 starts for trainer Richard Otto.
