First win for Star Thoroughbreds
18 January 2017
Derasa

Derasa (Squamosa x Jesting) scored an emphatic win in the first ‘big’ 2yo race of the season in Tasmania today. The promising filly was my first ever purchase for Denise Martin and Star Thoroughbreds. Squamosa, which raced in the same colours, ran second in a Golden Rose and now stands for $6,000 at stud in Victoria. Trainer Barry Campbell will now head toward the $100,000 Elwick Stakes on Hobart Cup day and the Gold Sovereign in Launceston.

Imposing Lass dominant in Group 3
13 January 2017

Imposing Lass (Makfi x Imposingly) took out the Group 3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes at Gosford today. Surprisingly backed and beaten in a four-horse field the start before, the former Queensland Oaks favourite showed a smart turn of foot on the better going to win in race record time. Well done to connections and Jason Collett, who had her perfectly placed in the one-one throughout. That’s a 50% win record and close to $300,000 in prize money for the mare now.

Three winners to round off the year

Two from First Light Racing and a former guineas place-getter have all won at venues around Victoria in the last two days. Linguist (Helmet x Vocabulary), a $100,000 purchase at Inglis Premier, won at Cranbourne and will now aim for the oaks-derby double in Tasmania. Piran (Pentire x My Guardian), $30,000 at NZB Select, scored her third win this time at Bairnsdale (photo). And Prima (Sir Percy x Azabella) won at the Valley. The gelding has really found form now, with 13331 in the form line. Happy New Year to everyone! I hope 2016 has been good to you. May 2017 be the year you find that champion we all dream of owning. I'm off to the Gold Coast on the 4th - if you see me at the sale sing out.

The first was High Distinction (Zacinto x Go to School) (above), a $10,000 purchase at Karaka. The three-year old gelding’s win at Te Rapa represents Cody Cole’s first training success so that's one he'll always remember. The other was Taiko Boom (Drumbeats x Automatic Slim) at Doomben, a gelding I bought down the road at the Gold Coast for $12,000. Well done to all connections.

Mares continue on their winning way

Bidii Babe (Not a Single Doubt x Arthur’s Lass) recorded her fourth win from her last five starts when crossing the line first at Eagle Farm today. While down at Riccarton, Aspen Lass (Alamosa x Tief) made it three wins from her last four starts thanks to a patient ride by Chris Johnson. You can see Bidii Babe’s wins on my YouTube channel if you're interested.

Super pinhook heading for next Caulfield Cup?

Co-trainer Amanda Turner has her sights on next year's Caulfield Cup with More to Gain (Sebring x Debutante) (pictured as a yearling) after the promising stayer came from second last to win at Randwick today. The horse looked super when I paid AU$36,000 for him at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale two years ago and even better when he sold for NZ$340,000 months later. Last December the now four-year old failed to finish a race at Rosehill and subsequently underwent surgery to remove a small bone chip. But he looks to have come back better than ever.

Hall of Fame (pictured as a yearling) brilliantly won a listed race at Riccarton today. I have nothing to do with the Savabeel colt, but I did buy the dam Around the Clock (Galileo) in foal to Deep Field. That $75,000 price tag is starting to look pretty good given Hall of Fame is now second favourite for the Two Thousand Guineas. Fingers crossed, Mary-Lee!
