Metier has its Eureka moment
21 November 2015

Three-yeald old gelding Metier (Stryker x Unblemished) powered home to win the $100,000 Eureka Stockade at Ballarat today. Trained by Tony McEvoy, it now has a win and two placings from four starts and prizemoney of $75,000. I originally paid $10,000 for the horse as a weanling after seeing how well it moved. The result represents more good news for the Three Bridges stallion Stryker, following the smart recent wins of Rangipo (owned and bred by John Thompson) as well as Baggio.

Two in a row for Ready to Run pinhook

More to Gain

More to Gain (Sebring x Debutante) won its second race in a row at Rosehill today. The three-year old gelding has now won $95,000, which goes some way to recovering the $280,000 purchase price at last year’s Ready to Run Sale. I originally paid $36,000 for the horse at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, which might sound cheap now but at the time Sebring wasn’t that popular. And the mare had left five foals without a winner, but I had always liked the family on type.

World Shopping

Exclusive Lass’s (Nicconi x World Exclusive) win in the listed fillies and mares race at Geelong means there have now been six black type graduates from the 2012 Magic Millions Select Weanling Sale. And I purchased three of them, including this mare ($10,000), Chill Party ($30,000) and Japhils ($50,000). All were pinhooks for Three Bridges Thoroughbreds. Exclusive Lass is closely related to the promising New Zealand 3yo, Xtravagant. Here's a photo of the half-brother to Exclusive Lass by Stryker, a weanling I bought in June.

Quinella in Group 1 Moir Stakes
2 October 2015

Congratulations to the owners of Buffering (Mossman x Action Annie) on another Group 1 win at Moonee Valley. The scenes of sheer jubilation after the race are a reminder of just how great this racing game can be! Second past the post - Ball of Muscle (Dubawi x Parfore) - is from the blue hen mare I bought for $30,000.

And another one…

Doc Holliday

Doc Holliday (High Chaparral x Fiammarosa) looks like a possible Victoria Derby runner judging by its win over a mile at Kembla today. Bought for $22,000, again on behalf of Three Bridges, the gelding sold for $180,000 at Inglis Premier. Second was a half-sister by Medaglia D'Oro to Fiveandahalfstar, so it wasn’t a bad maiden field by any stretch of the imagination. I liked the family so much that I bought another weanling from the mare a few months ago. By the sire Magic Albert, it will be for sale out of the Prima Park draft.

Exclusive Lass

It was good to see Exclusive Lass (Nicconi x World Exclusive) bolt away with the last at Moonee Valley on Friday night. Bought on behalf of Three Bridges for $10,000 then on-sold for $75,000 at Inglis Premier, the 4-year old mare has now won two and been placed four times in seven starts. Earlier this year, I bought the weanling by Stryker from World Exclusive, which is set to be sold at Karaka by Courtney Howells.

Pinch River breaks class record at Doomben

Pinch River2

Pinch River (Denman x Avenue Girl) broke a ten-year class record at Doomben on Saturday when winning over 1200m in 1.08.67. The gelding, which has now won five of 12 starts for $212,000 in prize money, won its first two races as a two-year old before running sixth to Unencumbered in a lead-up to the Magic Millions, a race which was probably just too early for him in retrospect. Pinch River’s three-year old season was restricted to just three starts, after which the owners decided to turn him out for a decent break. Hopefully the horse has turned the corner now and will go on to bigger and better things. I think the trainer might be considering the Magic Millions Series in January.
