Winner winner chicken dinner
Three more winners in Queensland in the past seven days, with Alpine Dancer (Top Echelon x Lonzotto) winning at Doomben, and Zafonic Dancer (Zoffany x Goddess of Wisdom) and Monaco Snob (Monaco Consul x Two Bob Snob) both first past the post at Sunshine Coast. I picked up Alpine Dancer (shown here as a yearling) for just $41,000 at the QTIS Sale in 2017. His sire hasn't done a lot - other than leaving River Lad and Our Boy Malachi - but you never know, this one might be a handy three-year old.
Two horses following similar paths?
Two five-year olds, both cheap buys at Magic Millions QTIS March Sale, both promising stayers for the same trainer, both won in Queensland this week over 2200m. One, Monaco Snob (Monaco Consul x Two Bob Snob), at the Sunshine Coast. And the other, Kubis (Love Conquers All x Aperto), at Doomben. I wonder where the similarities will end. I liked Kubis so much I bought him twice, as a weanling and a yearling. That’s him in the photo above.
Yes
Oh it’s good to be an owner on days like this! Well done to all involved with Leicester (Wanted x Defy The Odds), which took out the Group1 South Australian Derby at Morphettville. Since his maiden win at Terang, he’s gone from strength to strength so I’m pretty happy we kept him. I guess people didn’t place much stock in that result but when you look at the form out of the race it makes for impressive reading – beating Sopressa, the Oaks victor a week ago, and Exceltara, a winner in a strong form race at Caulfield.
Leicester defying the odds!
Leicester (Wanted x Defy The Odds) scored a deserved win at Sandown midweek after being a tragedy beaten at Moonee Valley, making it two wins from five starts for the three-year old. I bought the gelding at the Inglis Sydney Weanling Sale for $10,000. His sire hasn’t exactly set the breeding world alight but as I always say, there’s at least one good horse in every sire (just look at St Petersburg!). Out of a Galileo mare that was placed at two in England, Leicester is closely related to Index Linked and we think this one will be a staying type too.
Three out of five ain’t bad
The win of Only Wanna Sing (Your Song x Sweet Hollow) at Doomben yesterday made it three metropolitan winners from five purchases at last year’s Magic Millions January sale. Bought on behalf of Mary-Lee Trivett for $30,000, the colt was beaten a neck by Magic Millions race favourite, F Troop at his only other start, and joins fellow sales graduates, Pony Power and Pinch Memory as winners.
Pinch Memory picks up consolation
Pinch Memory (Denman x Noesis) was a good winner of the two-year old race over 1050m at Doomben today, providing owners with some consolation after missing out on a start in the Magic Millions three weeks ago. Trainer Robbie Heathcote has big wraps on the gelding and will likely give him one more run this time in, before looking toward stakes races over the winter carnival. Out of an Exceed And Excel mare, Pinch Memory cost $57,500 at the Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Woohoo for Miss Wahoo connections
Miss Wahoo (Master of Design x Fish Dive) won her second race back from a 44-week spell, at Morphetville today. The filly ran second at her very first start, at Flemington, before two unplaced runs and has come back looking better than ever. She cost $45,000 at the William Inglis Classic Sale.
